Work Placement (Internship)

6th semester

San Francisco Veteran Affairs Medical Center (Design Develoment)

This project is consisting of 4 buildings, 1 new research facility and 3 existing buildings for renovation. The site is located in San Francisco, in its most North-West part along the coast. I was assigned to work for the project for a month and some of the tasks I was required to perform included working on reflected ceiling plans, assigning area boundaries according to specific requirements from the client and preparing different floor plans showing the difference between Net Square Footage and Gross square footage. During the time I was working for this project I had the opportunity to acquire the specific requirements for drawing issuances and to learn how to correct drawings according to the project manager's remarks.

San Diego Central Courthouse

A new 23 storey building is to be built for San Diego Central Courthouse. The intent of the project is to enhance a safe and user friendly environment for the public, judges, sheriff and staff, so as to meet the current and future needs of the courts with an efficient and flexible building. Working for this project for two months gave me the opportunity to obtain extensive knowledge about the construction of a high rise building. Some of the exercises I had to carry out included preparation of access panel diagrams according to requirements given by the contractor, drafting details and working on ASKs. For the purpose of showing the path of a bus, I took the initiative to design and manage 3D conceptual mass in Revit, in order to examine the vehicle's swept path both in plan and section.

UCLA Medical Education Building (Design Development - Construction Drawings)

Working for that project gave me the possibility to not only extensively develop my Revit and BIM skills, but also to work on construction drawings. It gave me chance to get a better understanding on the workflow when helping with preparing construction plans and details. I gained knowledge about the typical methods of construction in the United States, different and inovative approach to problem solving and new detail connections.

Durign my work for this project, I was also assigned with the responsibility over managing and maintaining the Revit model, creating and modifying 3D family components for the spcific needs of the project.
